Information about University of Guyana greek week 2015, registering in a technical degree program to develop job skills, and taking free practice tests online. Which degrees will give you the best chances of landing a job after you graduate? Some students select a major because it teaches them practical skills that are valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major because they love the subject. Learning a foreign language while you're a student not only enriches your cultural understanding, but allows you to travel to your favorite country and enjoy an in-depth experience. If you can acquire language skills, you'll also increase your value in the workplace. The most popular college major is business, split equally between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, education, English and liberal arts dominate the list.

Online education can open up the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript, if you so choose. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Doing business online is a great option to supplement your income while still a student. The easiest way to begin is by writing a blog, and making money via the Google AdSense program. By registering a domain name, and signing up for cheap hosting, you can make a website in a few hours using a WordPress template. Similar to magazine page layout, website design success is governed by two main factors, visitor traffic and online sales conversions.

Online Courses - MOOCs

University of Guyana pagenameIf a high school student is passionate about going to a particular college, but doesn't have the grades, he or she may try to apply for a degree major that is less popular, or harder for the school to fill. Pursue your career interests, not high-paying starting salaries, and your overall job earnings will reflect the enthusiasm that you bring to your work, increasing over time as you gain business experience. If you focus your prospective degree choice on salary alone, there is the risk that you may suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending college, and you might end up earning a lot of money as a highly-skilled, technical consultant, or by starting your own small business. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, and offer a variety of learning platforms, utilizing cloud-based software and Google apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree earned on campus. Udemy online learning, a site which allows anyone to build (or take) online courses, is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Khan Academy now offers over 3,900 micro-lectures available via YouTube. Coursera, another online-learning software platform, has millions of enrolled students around the world. Through MIT Open Courseware online classes, educators can improve development of their curricula, making their instruction more effective.

US College Rankings:

Every year, US News, Money Magazine, and a few other national magazines publish annual college rankings. Another guide, best known for their 'Forbes 400' list of the richest people in America, the Forbes rankings have been getting a lot of attention for their list of 'America's Best Colleges.' New college rankings aim to reflect a greater emphasis on student satisfaction, as well as recognizing academic achievement. For critics of the U.S. News & World Report college rankings, the new Forbes College Ratings seem to be more balanced, and include high rankings for many smaller colleges. Peterson's Guide is a comprehensive guide to US colleges, designed for students trying to choose between competing colleges and universities.

Although the cost of tuition has risen for most 4-year colleges and universities, community colleges and trade schools remain an affordable option for those looking to earn an associates degree. The average community college student graduates with only a few thousand dollars in debt, compared to bachelors degree graduates. This means that associates degree recipients are likely to see a return on their investment sooner than those with a bachelors degree. If you're planning on transferring to a four-year program, an associates degree program can be a good idea. You can save money for the first two years of your education by studying at a local community college, but ultimately receive your bachelors degree from a four-year university.

Technical Degree Programs

Those students who graduate with technical degrees, especially majoring in computer programming, business administration, and health care may indeed find more job openings. An associates degree is a two-year program that either results in an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree. Some careers that require an associates degree include becoming a dental assistant, occupational or physical therapy assistant, or licensed practical nurse (LPN). The greatest downside to an associates degrees in the job market is only that you will be competing with individuals holding bachelors degrees. Therefore, make sure you're comfortable in the niche you've chosen.

Business

Students will impress future bosses more with an impressive portfolio than with an advanced degree, so practice your skills as a consultant for local companies. Candidates with prior industry experience are preferred by interviewers, but an applicant's past experience must be relevant to the particular job vacancy that the company needs to fill. Your resume must show a clear pattern of success over time, based on numeric results and personal achievements. Companies frequently publish rankings, offer various awards and incentives, and conduct monthly reviews of employee performance. Seek out a mentor with maturity and the connections to help you find the most direct path to advancement in your industry.

Personal connections that you make at work can outweigh job performance in determining who gets promoted. The main challenge in getting your degree is to choose a career that you will enjoy, and can pursue for many years. The job vacancies for website designers are still increasing, as retail firms move a greater percentage of their business online. You can locate your state government job bank to get assistance in many areas, like writing a resume, conducting a thorough job search, or researching company data to prepare for a job interview. Finally, as the healthcare industry expands its use of electronic medical records, protecting patients' personal data becomes a priority.

Nursing:

There is indeed a shortage of nurses, but please be aware that the education required is very challenging. Community colleges offer an Associate of Science degree in Nursing, and some diploma programs also award certificates in practical nursing. Nurse training can take a long time to complete, based on your ability to learn, and whether you are able to attend nursing school full-time. University nursing degrees, such as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, reward graduates with advanced education, additional applied training, and competitive starting salaries.

Business & Medical Job Listings

Although most jobs which pay six-figure salaries require a college degree, technical fields offer high salaries based more on ability than which school you graduated from. Students will impress future bosses more with an impressive portfolio than with an advanced degree, so practice your skills as a consultant for local companies. Candidates with prior industry experience are preferred by interviewers, so you resume must show a clear pattern of success over time, based on numeric results and personal achievements.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
